When to Go

Spring (March–May) is the best time to visit New Iberia and Acadiana generally. The weather is warm rather than brutal, the crawfish season is at its peak from February through April, and the countryside is green. Festival season is active — the Cajun Zydeco Festival in Lafayette, Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival, and Mardi Gras celebrations in the weeks before Lent.

Summer (June–August) is hot and humid with daytime temperatures regularly above 35°C and occasional hurricanes. Fall cools gradually and is pleasant by October. Winter is mild by Northern standards — temperatures in the mid-teens celsius — but the crawfish season is quiet and some outdoor activities are less appealing.

The Sugarcane Festival in New Iberia itself runs over the last weekend of September and celebrates the sugar industry that has dominated the Teche country economy for two centuries.
