The Kennebec River Rail Trail follows the old Maine Central Railroad corridor south from Augusta along the west bank of the Kennebec, passing through Hallowell and on toward Gardiner. The surface is paved and almost completely flat — a rarity in Maine — making it accessible to cyclists of all levels as well as walkers and joggers. The river views are good throughout, and the stretch through Hallowell passes the old granite quarrying district. The trail is around 6.5 miles one way from Augusta to Gardiner; bring a bike and allow a couple of hours to ride it at a comfortable pace.
