The State Capitol, completed in 1832, was designed by Charles Bulfinch — the same architect who worked on the United States Capitol in Washington. Its granite dome and neoclassical facade dominate Augusta's skyline. Free tours of the building are available when the legislature is not in session; the interior includes murals and displays on Maine's history and government. Capitol Park, the landscaped grounds surrounding the building, is a pleasant place to walk in any season.
