The Zillman Art Museum in downtown Bangor — affiliated with the University of Maine — is Maine's most serious art museum outside Portland. The permanent collection spans American modern and contemporary art, with works by David Hockney, Andy Warhol, Edward Hopper, Pablo Picasso, Winslow Homer, and a particularly strong selection of paintings by Marsden Hartley, the great Maine modernist who grew up in nearby Lewiston.
The museum mounts several temporary exhibitions a year alongside the permanent collection. Admission is free, which makes it one of the better cultural bargains in northern Maine. The museum is located on Harlow Street, a short walk from most downtown hotels and restaurants.
