Jordan Pond House Popovers

The Jordan Pond House sits inside Acadia National Park, about eight miles from town, with the pond and the twin domes of the Bubbles framed perfectly behind the lawn. It is the one Acadia institution that almost everyone makes time for: a pot of tea and a tray of warm popovers with strawberry jam and butter, eaten on the grass.

Reservations are essential in season and can be made online a month ahead. The full menu is mediocre by Bar Harbor standards but the setting and the popovers are the point. Drive or take the Island Explorer Route 5.

A story
Tea and popovers on the Jordan Pond House lawn has been a tradition since the 1890s, when the Pond House was a tea room run by the McIntire family. The current building dates from 1982, replacing the original after it burned down — but the popovers, hollow and butter-yellow, are made to the McIntire recipe.
