Opera House at Boothbay Harbor

Restored 1892 opera house and community venue on Townsend Avenue

The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor, built in 1892, is a restored Victorian performance hall on Townsend Avenue that serves as the town's main cultural venue. It was built as a Knights of Pythias hall and hosted theatrical performances, community events, and travelling acts through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After decades of decline it was restored and reopened, and now stages concerts, film screenings, theatre, and lectures throughout the year.

The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and is notable as one of the few surviving rural opera houses in Maine. Checking the events calendar before visiting is worthwhile — the summer programming often includes nationally touring acts alongside local performers.
