Boothbay Harbor

Maine harbour village with whale cruises, puffin trips, and botanical gardens just inland

Boothbay Harbor is a classic Maine coastal village on a protected inlet about an hour north of Portland. The harbor is the center of activity — whale watching and puffin cruises depart from the waterfront, and the shops and restaurants along the narrow streets cater to summer visitors without feeling entirely overrun.

The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, just outside town, are worth the trip on their own — 300 acres of garden rooms and native woodland. The Burnt Island Light, accessible by guided boat tour, is one of the oldest lighthouses in Maine and runs an entertaining living history program. In late June the town hosts Windjammer Days, when tall ships fill the harbor for a week.

Eating Out

Boothbay Harbor's restaurant scene is firmly oriented around seafood, particularly lobster. The lobster pounds are the most honest places to eat — you pick your lobster from the tank, it's boiled, and you eat it outside at a picnic table with butter and a view of the harbor. Trevett's Lobster Pound and Robinson's Wharf are long-established options across the water in Southport Island, a short drive from town.

In town, the restaurants along the waterfront serve chowders, fried clams, and the full range of Maine seafood standards. Prices are summer-tourist elevated, but portions are generous and the quality of the raw ingredients is hard to fault. For something away from the seafood strip, the Boathouse Bistro on Granary Way has a more varied menu. Cap'n Fish's on the pier is a reliable spot for a quick chowder or lobster roll without much fanfare.

Getting There

Boothbay Harbor has no rail or bus service. A car is effectively required. From Portland, take I-295 north to Brunswick, then US-1 north to the Boothbay Harbor exit (Route 27 south). The drive takes about 90 minutes. From Boston it's roughly three hours.

The nearest major airport is Portland International Jetport, with connections to most US hub airports. Bangor International Airport is another option if you're approaching from the north.

Parking in Boothbay Harbor is tight in peak summer season. The town operates a public parking area off Route 27 at the edge of town, with a short walk into the village centre.

When to Go

Boothbay Harbor is a summer destination. July and August are peak season — the harbor is full, the restaurants are open, whale watching runs daily, and Windjammer Days (late June) is the year's biggest event. The weather is pleasant though rarely hot by southern standards: expect highs around 24°C, cool evenings, and the occasional foggy morning that burns off by midday.

Shoulder season (late May, June, and September) is increasingly popular — the crowds are lighter, prices are a bit lower, and the weather is still good. October brings fall foliage, which can be dramatic along the coast. Most businesses close from November through April, and Boothbay Harbor in winter is a very quiet place indeed, though the Gardens Aglow event at the botanical gardens draws visitors in November and December.

Summer accommodation books up weeks in advance; plan early.
