Dover-Foxcroft

Maine river town and practical gateway to Moosehead Lake and the North Woods.

Dover-Foxcroft is the county seat of Piscataquis County, Maine's least populated county and one of the wildest corners of the northeastern United States. The town sits on the Piscataquis River and serves as a gateway to the Moosehead Lake region and the vast North Woods wilderness beyond. If you are heading into Maine's interior, this is likely where you will stock up on supplies and get your last reliable cell signal.

The town itself is a merger of two villages -- Dover and Foxcroft -- that joined in 1922, and the compact downtown still has a split personality, with two distinct centers connected by a bridge over the Piscataquis River. The Blacksmith Shop Gallery is worth a stop, and the Center Theatre hosts films and live performances in a restored 1940s movie house.

Dover-Foxcroft is primarily a base for outdoor exploration. The river offers good fishing for brook trout and smallmouth bass, and the surrounding hills have miles of hiking and snowmobile trails. Borestone Mountain Audubon Sanctuary, about ten miles north, has a moderate hike to a summit with panoramic views of the lake-studded interior. From here, Baxter State Park and Mount Katahdin are about ninety minutes north -- this is serious backcountry territory.
