Borestone Mountain Audubon Sanctuary

About ten miles north of town, Borestone Mountain is managed by Maine Audubon as a wildlife sanctuary and offers one of the more rewarding hikes in this part of the state. The trail is moderate — a few miles round trip with steady elevation gain — and the summit delivers panoramic views over a landscape of lakes, ponds, and unbroken forest. This is good birding territory throughout the season, and the high point gives you a real sense of how vast the Maine interior actually is. Bring water; the summit is exposed.
