Raye's Mustard Mill is the last remaining stone-ground, cold-process mustard mill in North America. J.W. Raye founded the operation in 1900 to supply mustard to the sardine canneries that once lined the Eastport waterfront; those canneries are long gone but the mill keeps grinding. Visitors can tour the old stone-grinding machinery, watch mustard being made, and buy from the full range of flavours in the mill store. The building itself — a working artifact of the town's canning-industry heyday — is as interesting as the product.
Raye's Mustard Mill
A story
Raye's was originally supplying mustard to Eastport's sardine canneries, which at their peak made the town the sardine capital of the world. When the last cannery closed, the mill outlived the entire industry it was built to serve.
