Rocky Gap is the closest state park to Cumberland — about 15 minutes east on I-68. The centrepiece is Lake Habeeb, a 243-acre reservoir wrapped in steep wooded ridges. There is a public swimming beach, a campground with 278 sites, hiking trails climbing to Evitts Mountain Overlook, and a small resort with a casino at the southern end.
The colours in late October are exceptional — the Allegheny hardwoods turn the surrounding ridges red and gold for about two weeks. In summer the lake is a serious swimming destination for the whole western Maryland region.
