The Allegany Museum occupies the city's old Federal Building, a 1933 limestone-clad Art Deco block on the corner of Pershing and Liberty. The collections tell the layered transport history of Cumberland — the National Road, the C&O Canal, the B&O Railroad, the Western Maryland — plus the industries that came along with them: coal, glass, brewing, textiles.
Permanent exhibits include the Cumberland Glass display (the city's glassworks produced some serious art glass in the late 19th century) and a children's "Smart Building" section. The downstairs gallery hosts rotating exhibits by regional artists. Admission $5; closed Mondays.
