Maria Mitchell Association

The Maria Mitchell Association preserves the legacy of America's first professional female astronomer through a cluster of properties in central Nantucket: the birthplace where she grew up, a science library, an aquarium on the waterfront, and the observatory named in her honour on Milk Street Extension. Taken together they form one of the most engaging science and history experiences on the island.

The observatory offers public star-gazing programs in summer that use the same hill where Mitchell first trained her telescope on the night sky. The aquarium focuses on local marine species and works well for families. The association also runs nature walks, research programs, and science education for children — it functions as a working scientific institution, not just a monument.

A story
Maria Mitchell was born on Nantucket in 1818, the daughter of a Quaker banker who used his sextant to rate the chronometers of whaling ships. In 1847 she discovered a comet using a small telescope on the roof of the Pacific National Bank. The following year she became the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
