Brant Point Lighthouse

Brant Point Lighthouse sits at the entrance to Nantucket Harbour, so close to the ferry channel that arriving and departing passengers can read the light from the deck. It is an easy walk or bike ride from the ferry terminal, and the point itself offers good views back across the harbor to the town skyline of church steeples and grey-shingled houses.

By Nantucket tradition, anyone leaving the island tosses a penny over their shoulder into the harbor as the ferry passes Brant Point — to ensure they will return. Whether or not you believe in it, the gesture belongs to the island's quiet mythology. The lighthouse grounds are accessible year-round.

A story
Brant Point Lighthouse is the second oldest lighthouse site in the United States — a light has guided ships into Nantucket Harbour from this point since 1746. The current structure, painted white and standing only 26 feet tall, is one of the shortest lighthouses in New England, but its low profile means it was rebuilt no fewer than nine times after storms destroyed its predecessors.
