Eating Out

New Bedford's Portuguese and Cape Verdean population has left a strong culinary imprint. You will find bacalhau (salt cod), caldo verde (potato and kale soup), and linguiça (spiced sausage) in numerous restaurants around the city. The waterfront area near the historic district has expanded its restaurant scene in recent years, and several spots serve the catch landed daily by the city's commercial fishing fleet. Scallops from the local draggers are a particular point of pride — New Bedford consistently lands more scallops than any other port in the country.
