On the campus of Clark University on the south side of Worcester stands a small bronze of a seated Sigmund Freud, commemorating his only lectures in the United States, delivered here in September 1909. The five lectures Freud gave at Clark, alongside talks by Carl Jung and other early analysts, introduced psychoanalysis to an American audience and gave the new field considerable academic legitimacy.
The statue is on the university quad, easy to see from Main Street. It is a curiosity rather than a major attraction, but for anyone interested in the history of psychology — or just looking for an out-of-the-way Worcester oddity — it is worth the short detour.
