Zingerman's Delicatessen

The most famous food destination in Ann Arbor and arguably in all of Michigan. Zingerman's is a traditional Jewish deli that has grown into a nationally recognized food institution, known for towering sandwiches made with excellent bread and carefully sourced ingredients. The corned beef, pastrami, and Reuben are the signatures, but the menu is long and the quality is consistent across it.

Expect a line, especially at lunch on weekends. Prices are higher than a typical deli — a sandwich runs $18-25 — but the portions are large and the ingredients justify the cost. The shop also sells a curated selection of cheeses, oils, vinegars, and baked goods that make good gifts or picnic supplies. Located in the Kerrytown neighborhood at the corner of Detroit Street and Kingsley Street.

A story
Ari Weinzweig and Paul Saginaw opened Zingerman's in 1982 in a building that had previously been a grocery store. Rather than franchising their success, they created the "Zingerman's Community of Businesses" — a collection of related food enterprises including a bakehouse, a creamery, and a candy company, all in Ann Arbor, all independently managed.
