Corktown

Detroit's oldest neighbourhood, revitalised around Michigan Avenue

Corktown, just west of downtown, is the oldest surviving neighbourhood in Detroit, originally settled by Irish immigrants from County Cork in the 1840s. The corridor along Michigan Avenue between Trumbull and Rosa Parks Boulevard has become one of the city's hottest restaurant strips: Slows Bar-B-Q, Mudgie's Deli, Astro Coffee, Folk, and Ottava Via all sit within a few blocks. Michigan Central Station, restored by Ford in 2024, anchors the western end.

The neighbourhood retains its Victorian houses and a few traditional Irish bars (Nemo's, Nancy Whiskey). On St Patrick's Day the parade is a serious event. Tiger Stadium once stood here; the site is now a small ballpark with a youth field.
