Fox Theatre

Lavish 1928 movie palace, now a concert and Broadway venue

Address 2211 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48201

The Fox is the largest of the surviving 1920s American movie palaces, seating just over 5,000 in a fantasy interior that mixes Burmese, Indian, Chinese, and Persian motifs. The lobby is six storeys tall, the auditorium gilded to the rafters, and the chandelier weighs more than a small car. William Fox built it in 1928 as the flagship of his Fox chain.

It declined with the city through the 1970s, was restored by the Ilitch family in 1988, and now hosts touring Broadway shows, concerts, and the annual Christmas Carol. Even if you do not have tickets, the lobby is worth a look — tours are occasionally offered.
