An all-ages, substance-free music venue downtown that has been the heart of Flint's punk, hardcore and indie scene since 1994. Built by local musician Joel Rash and run as a non-profit, the Local has launched several touring acts and remains one of the few places in town where you can reliably catch a Friday-night show.
The venue is bare-bones — a single black-box room, a small bar serving soda and snacks — and that is half the appeal. It is also one of the more important places in the city for understanding the cultural energy that survives, and sometimes thrives, in spite of Flint's economic story.
