P.J. Hoffmaster State Park

Lake Michigan state park with high dunes, long beach frontage, and forested hiking trails.

P.J. Hoffmaster State Park is one of the strongest nature stops on the Muskegon side of Lake Michigan. The park protects several miles of shoreline, wooded dunes, and a trail system that climbs to broad lake views. It feels more varied than a simple beach park because you can move quickly from sand to forest to dune ridge.

Bring shoes for the trails as well as beach gear. The Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center is useful for understanding the dune ecology, especially with children, and the beach is best in late afternoon when the light starts dropping over the lake. A state park pass or day-use fee may apply.
