The Saugatuck Chain Ferry is small, seasonal, and unusually memorable. The ferry is hand-cranked across the Kalamazoo River, carrying passengers between downtown and the west bank near Mount Baldhead.
It is practical if you are walking to the dune and Oval Beach, but it is also part of the pleasure of Saugatuck: slow, low-tech, and just odd enough to feel local. It usually runs in fair weather during the warmer season.
