Grand Traverse Bay is the defining feature of Traverse City, and getting out on the water is one of the best things to do here. The bay divides into East and West arms, and the water — particularly in the East Arm — is famously clear and shallow, turning brilliant shades of blue-green in summer sun that visitors often find surprising for a freshwater lake.
Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available from several outfitters along the downtown bayfront and at Clinch Park, the waterfront park at the foot of the downtown grid. The bay is calm enough for beginners in good weather, and paddling east along the West Arm gives excellent views of the city skyline backed by forested hills. Sailors will find good conditions most summer afternoons when the lake breezes come up. Swimming from the public beaches along Grandview Parkway is free and excellent; West End Beach and Clinch Park Beach are the most central options.
