The Leelanau Trail is a 17-mile paved rail trail that runs northwest from Traverse City to Suttons Bay along the western edge of the Leelanau Peninsula. The trail follows a former railroad corridor, which means it is nearly flat — unusual terrain for northern Michigan — and passes through cherry orchards, vineyards, and wooded stretches with occasional bay views. It is part of US Bicycle Route 35 and is well-maintained.
Bike rentals are available in downtown Traverse City. Riding the full trail to Suttons Bay and back makes for a solid half-day, though most visitors do the first few miles out and back as a pleasant morning ride. The stretch between Traverse City and Greilickville is particularly scenic in late spring when the orchards are in blossom.
