When to Go

Summer (July and August) is the most popular time to visit, with warm temperatures (20–25°C), the full outdoor calendar, and Lake Superior at its most inviting. The city can get busy with visitors from the Twin Cities on summer weekends.

Autumn, particularly September and October, is excellent: the North Shore fall foliage is spectacular, the crowds thin, and the lake has a dramatic quality when the first cold fronts roll through. This is the season for watching storms move across the lake from the Canal Park breakwater.

Winter is cold and snowy — January temperatures regularly drop below -20°C with wind chill — but Duluth has a committed winter culture: Nordic skiing at Spirit Mountain, the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon in January, and the pleasures of a lakeside city under heavy snow. Not for everyone, but the hardy appreciate it.

Spring (April and May) can be unpredictable. The ice goes out of the lake in April and the shore can be dramatic, but the weather is unreliable.
