Grand Portage is the last community on Minnesota Highway 61, 36 miles northeast of Grand Marais and about 150 miles from Duluth. The Pigeon River border crossing into Ontario is 6 miles further on, with onward connections to Thunder Bay (45 miles) and the Trans-Canada Highway.
There is no public transport into Grand Portage; you need a car. The closest airports are Thunder Bay (CYQT) in Ontario and Duluth International (DLH) in Minnesota.
The Voyageur Marina at the end of Stevens Road is the departure point for the Isle Royale Queen IV and the smaller Voyageur II, the only passenger ferries to Isle Royale National Park. Crossings run mid-May through late September; book months ahead in season. Grand Portage is also a base for floatplane service to the island through Isle Royale Seaplanes.
