Mount Josephine

Short, steep hike with the best view on the North Shore

The trailhead is on County Road 17 about three miles north of the village. The path climbs roughly 700 feet in just over a mile to a bare basalt knob at 1,277 feet, with a panoramic view east to Isle Royale, north up the Pigeon River valley into Ontario, and south down the Minnesota coast as far as the eye can see in clear weather.

Steep and rocky in places — proper shoes — and it can be windy and cold on the summit even in July. Allow two hours round-trip. The hike is on Grand Portage Band land, open to the public; no fee.
