A small, gnarled Eastern white cedar growing from a fissure in the basalt cliff at Hat Point — somewhere between 300 and 400 years old, despite the harsh conditions of wind, salt spray, and almost no soil. The Ojibwe name Manidoo-giizhikens means "Little Cedar Spirit Tree", and the tree is sacred to the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
The tree sits on tribal land and is no longer open to direct visits without permission from the Band, after years of damage from photographers and souvenir-takers. The best view is from the water — Voyageur II makes a brief pass on its Isle Royale crossings — or from a respectful distance on the Hat Point road with a tribal guide.
