L.Q.C. Lamar House

The L.Q.C. Lamar House Museum is a small, well-kept historic-house museum a few blocks north of the Square. Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar, who lived in the house from 1869, was an Oxford lawyer, a Confederate diplomat in Europe, a US senator from Mississippi, Secretary of the Interior, and finally an associate justice of the US Supreme Court — one of the few Americans to hold all those offices.

The house is a modest Greek Revival cottage and the contents are largely period furnishings rather than personal Lamar artefacts, but the docent-led tour is good on the politics of post-Civil War Mississippi. Lamar is one of the eight senators profiled in John F. Kennedy's Profiles in Courage, which is what most American visitors will know him from. Open weekday afternoons; admission is free.
