The Grove

The Grove is a ten-acre tree-shaded square at the heart of the University of Mississippi campus and the social centre of campus life. On any ordinary day it is a pleasant lawn under oaks, magnolias, and elms, with brick paths threading between the older campus buildings. On a home football Saturday it transforms into one of the more spectacular communal events in American college sports.

The surrounding buildings — the Lyceum, the Croft Institute, the University Museum, and the old library — are worth looking at on the same circuit. The Walk of Champions runs from the Grove down to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium at its southern end. There is a free walking-tour map available at the campus visitor centre near the Lyceum.

A story
The Grove tailgate before an Ole Miss football game is one of the most elaborately performed rituals in college sports. Fans set up tents the night before; tablecloths come out, chandeliers go up, and many tailgaters dress in full suit and tie or dress and pearls. ESPN once estimated the Saturday Grove at 100,000 people on a home game day — more people than live in the entire county the rest of the week.
