Ammadelle is an Italianate mansion built around 1859 on North Lamar Boulevard and one of the most photographed houses in north Mississippi. Designed by the Memphis architect Calvert Vaux (who would later design Central Park in New York), the house is a near-perfect example of mid-19th-century Tuscan villa style transplanted to the Mississippi Delta — square tower, asymmetrical wings, arched windows, ornate brackets.
The house is privately owned and not generally open for visits, but the exterior is fully visible from the street and the cast-iron fence is more than worth a photograph. The building has appeared in several Hollywood productions including the 1980s television adaptation of Faulkner's The Reivers. The surrounding North Lamar Historic District has half a dozen other notable antebellum and Reconstruction-era houses on the same short walk.
