Eating Out

Vicksburg's dining scene punches above its weight for a city this size. The downtown area has the best concentration of restaurants, most within walking distance of the historic district.

Walnut Hills is an institution, serving Southern home cooking at long communal round tables — fried chicken, turnip greens, black-eyed peas, and fresh cornbread. Lunch is the meal to go for. Rusty's Riverfront Grill is the place for catfish and shrimp on the water, with views across the Mississippi toward Louisiana. Burger Village has been feeding locals for decades with straightforward burgers and hand-cut fries — no frills, reliably good.

The city has a solid bar scene along Washington Street, with a handful of places open late on weekends.
