Fort Osage

Fort Osage is the main reason travelers should know Buckner is here. The reconstructed fort and trading post stand on a bluff near Sibley, looking over the Missouri River from a site tied directly to early United States expansion.

The visit is strongest if you are interested in frontier history beyond the simple romance of cabins and trails. Fort Osage was about trade, diplomacy, military control, and the complicated relations between the United States and Native nations.

A story
William Clark selected the Fort Osage site after the Lewis and Clark expedition, choosing a bluff with a commanding view of the Missouri River. The post became both a military outpost and a government trading factory, which meant diplomacy, commerce, and pressure on Native lands were all happening in the same place.
