Buckner

Small Missouri River country town near Kansas City, linked to frontier history at nearby Fort Osage.

Buckner is a small town east of Kansas City, set in the Missouri River country of eastern Jackson County. It is close enough to the metro to feel connected, but the landscape opens quickly into fields, creeks, rail lines, and older river settlements.

The reason to stop is not Buckner itself so much as the frontier history around it. Fort Osage, a reconstructed early nineteenth-century trading post above the Missouri River, is the standout nearby sight and one of the better ways to understand the United States pushing west from the Mississippi.

Buckner works as a quiet side trip from Kansas City or Independence. Add Sibley and the river crossings if you like small places where transportation history and rural Missouri overlap.
