Venice Cafe

Mosaic-covered eccentric bar on the southern edge of Benton Park

The Venice Cafe is a place where the building is the main attraction. From the outside it looks unremarkable; inside, every wall, floor, ceiling, table, and bar is covered in obsessive mosaic — broken plates, mirror shards, marbles, beer caps, ceramic figurines pressed into endless concrete. The patio extends the treatment outdoors with grottos, a fountain, and small caves.

The clientele matches the decor — a mix of bohemian regulars, curious tourists, and live music crowds. The kitchen serves serviceable bar food; the cocktails are good; the beer list is broad. Cash preferred. Live blues and roots music most nights.

A story
The Venice has been built piece by piece since 1989, almost entirely out of broken china, mirror shards, bottle caps, and salvaged junk pressed into concrete by owner Jeff Lockheed and a rotating cast of helpers. The result is one of the strangest interiors in any American bar — every surface covered, no two square inches alike.
