Ted Drewes Frozen Custard

Classic frozen custard stand on Route 66, since 1929

Ted Drewes has been making frozen custard at its Chippewa Street location on Route 66 since 1941, with the original stand having opened in 1929 in a different part of town. It is a St Louis institution: long queues in summer, the same paper-cup menus, and the famous "concrete" — custard so dense the cup is handed to you inverted.

The product itself is excellent — denser and richer than soft-serve, less icy than ice cream, with a long menu of mix-ins ranging from the classic chocolate chip to seasonal pumpkin. Cash and card both accepted. The Grand Avenue location is open year-round; Christmas-tree sales take over the parking lot in December.

A story
Ted Drewes serves its signature "concrete" — frozen custard so thick that the staff hand it to you upside down to prove it won't fall out of the cup. The trick was invented in the 1950s and is now a defining ritual of any visit.
