Fabulous Fox Theatre

Lavishly restored 1929 picture palace, now hosting touring Broadway

The Fox is one of the great surviving movie palaces of the 1920s — a 4,500-seat behemoth on Grand Boulevard built in 1929 by William Fox at the height of the silent-film era. The interior is a riot of "Siamese Byzantine" decoration: gilded elephants, dragons, marble columns, an enormous chandelier, and a Wurlitzer organ that still gets used.

After near-demolition in the late 1970s it was rescued and meticulously restored, reopening in 1982. It now hosts touring Broadway productions, comedy specials, and the occasional film with the organ accompaniment. Even without a show, the Fox runs daily tours of the interior — well worth an hour for anyone interested in pre-Depression American architecture.
