M&M Cigar Store

A long, narrow saloon on Main Street that has been pouring drinks more or less continuously since 1890. The interior is a study in 1890s Western bar architecture — long mahogany counter, oil paintings of nudes, beer mirrors from defunct breweries. There is also a grill at the back doing burgers and breakfast at any hour.

The M&M closed briefly in 2003 and reopened a year later under new owners who restored rather than refurbished. Still 24-hour, still cash-friendly. Order a Sean O'Farrell — a shot of Irish whiskey with a beer back, the traditional miners' drink after a shift.

A story
The M&M opened in 1890 as a cigar shop with a back-room bar — and during Prohibition it ran round the clock with both doors open. The bar refused to close even for the funerals of presidents; it was so famously continuous that a Butte joke held that the only way to lock the M&M's doors was to find the keys, which nobody had seen since 1908.
