Mai Wah Museum

A small museum on China Alley, in the Mai Wah and Wah Chong Tai buildings — the surviving Chinese-built commercial blocks of Butte's lost Chinatown. At its peak in the 1890s Butte's Chinese population numbered around 2,500, the largest in the Rocky Mountains. By the 1940s, after decades of legal harassment and the Chinese Exclusion Act, almost none remained.

Exhibits cover Chinese mining, laundries, restaurants, and the social life of a community that built its own temples and herbalists. Open in summer; admission inexpensive.
