Mount Helena City Park

Summit hike with big views, right from downtown

A thousand-hectare city park that rises directly behind downtown Helena — no car needed, no entry fee, no crowds. The summit of Mount Helena sits at 1,965 meters, and on a clear day you can see the Elkhorn Mountains and the broad Missouri River valley below. The park has over 24 kilometers of trails. The gentlest option follows the ridge from the downtown trailhead to the summit in about 3 kilometers; the 1906 Trail is steeper and involves some scrambling on limestone cliffs. Both are well-marked.
