The state's primary history museum sits next to the Capitol and holds one of the largest collections of Charles M. Russell artwork in existence — over 200 paintings, drawings, and sculptures. The permanent exhibition covers the full arc of Montana history from Indigenous peoples through the fur trade, gold rush, and homesteading era. The Montana Homeland gallery uses photographs, artifacts, and oral histories to give the history texture beyond the standard pioneer narrative. Admission is modest; the Russell collection alone is worth the stop.
