Missoula's outdoor life is its main draw. The Clark Fork River runs through the centre of town and the mountains are visible from downtown; the city's identity is built around this proximity to the wilderness. The University of Montana brings an intellectual energy that shows in the quality of the bookshops, breweries, and independent restaurants.
The Saturday farmers' market at Caras Park, May through October, is one of the best in Montana — local produce, food trucks, and live music in a riverfront setting. The riverfront trail runs for several kilometres and connects the downtown to the University district.
