Tahoe Rim Trail

The Tahoe Rim Trail is a 165-mile loop circumnavigating Lake Tahoe along the ridgeline above the water. Several sections of the trail are easily accessed from Incline Village, offering day hikes with views down into the lake from above. The trail climbs through pine and fir forest before breaking out onto open granite ridges — the scale of the lake becomes apparent once you gain elevation and can see the full oval of water below.

The most popular local access point is from the Tunnel Creek Road trailhead, which leads to a high ridge section with views in both directions along the Sierra crest. Strong hikers can combine sections of the Rim Trail with the Flume Trail for a long day out. Ambitious backpackers tackle the full loop in 10 to 14 days, but most visitors pick one or two sections for day trips. Trail conditions vary significantly by season; the snow-free window runs roughly July through October.
