The Ugly Mug

A neighbourhood bar on Washington Street Mall that has been there since 1926 and never bothered to be anything fancier. Burgers, beer, and Wednesday-night Mug Club. The atmosphere is loud, friendly, and totally unpretentious — a useful counterweight to the porch-rocker gentility of the rest of town.

A story
The bar's ceiling is covered with hundreds of wooden mugs, one for each member of its Mug Club. When a member dies the mug is reversed and a small American flag is placed in it — a slow inventory of the bar's hundred-year history made visible overhead.
