The Firemen's Monument in Church Square Park is an unusually elaborate 28-foot column topped by a bronze fireman, completed in 1891 by Caspar Buberl — the same sculptor responsible for the freize on Washington's National Building Museum. It is a serious piece of Gilded Age civic art for what was even then a small city.
The base lists the names of Hoboken firefighters who died in service. The park around it makes a pleasant break in a Washington Street walk; benches, mature plane trees, and a small playground.
