Evans-Ellis Cemetery

The Evans-Ellis Cemetery is one of New Jersey's stranger sights: a small 18th-century family burial ground, surrounded by a wrought-iron fence, marooned in the middle of an AMC cinema parking lot off Route 1 just outside town. Seven Evans and Ellis family members are buried here, the oldest stone dating to 1818.

Cars wash past on both sides. A small plaque explains the history. It is not worth a special trip but is a curiously moving five minutes if you are seeing a movie or stopping at the strip mall anyway.

A story
Seven members of the Evans and Ellis families are buried in a small fenced plot in the middle of what is now a parking lot for the AMC movie theatre on Route 1. When the strip mall was built in the 1990s, the developer was legally barred from disturbing the graves — so they paved around them.
