The First Reformed Church at 160 Neilson Street is the descendant of New Brunswick's original Dutch Reformed congregation, founded in 1717. The Dutch settled the Raritan valley early — the city itself was Dutch before it was English — and this church traces directly to that community. The current 1812 building is a fine example of Federal-style ecclesiastical architecture, with a tall white steeple and a clear interior with a simple pulpit.
The congregation still worships here and the building is generally open for Sunday services. The graveyard contains 18th- and 19th-century markers in Dutch as well as English, a reminder of the bilingual community that built it.
