George Street Playhouse is a regional theatre company that punches well above its station. Founded in 1974, it has premiered work that went on to Broadway and the Tony Awards — most famously "The Toxic Avenger" musical and "I Am My Own Wife." Today it shares the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center on Livingston Avenue with Crossroads Theatre.
The season runs October to May, typically a mix of new American plays and revivals. The theatre seats around 460 and the new building gives every seat a good sightline. If you are in town on a weekend, this is the most reliable place to find serious contemporary theatre between New York and Philadelphia.
