The State Theatre on Livingston Avenue is the city's grand venue, a 1,851-seat former vaudeville palace from 1921 now used for everything from Broadway tours and symphony concerts to comedians and ballet. The ornate interior is the main reason to take whatever is on the calendar; it is one of the better-preserved early movie palaces in the New York metropolitan area.
Programming runs September to June and is a mix of touring music acts, family shows, and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, which uses the hall as one of its regular venues. Tickets are generally cheaper than equivalent New York shows. The cheap-seat balcony has acoustics as good as the orchestra.
