Huddy Park

Huddy Park sits on the edge of the Toms River at the bottom of Water Street, a small waterfront green dedicated to Captain Joshua Huddy, one of the most dramatic figures in Ocean County's Revolutionary War history. Huddy was a local militia captain who successfully defended the town's salt works against British raids before being captured and executed by Loyalist forces — an act that became a national scandal in 1782.

The park itself is modest — a bit of open lawn and benches with water views — but it's a pleasant place to watch the river and the boats. The adjacent waterfront offers views across to the opposite shore. It's a natural pause on a walk through the historic district.

A story
Captain Joshua Huddy was captured by Loyalists in 1782 and hanged without trial — an extrajudicial killing that outraged General Washington and nearly derailed the peace negotiations ending the Revolutionary War. Huddy's death prompted Washington to threaten reprisals against British prisoners.
